Why we’re building MemReel

MemReel started with two moments in the life of our founder, Bhavik.

The first came when he was looking back at photos of his son from when he was two or three. It was heartwarming, the way it always is. But something felt missing, and that feeling got stronger the further back he went. It took him a while to figure out what it was. The photos and videos were all there, backed up and neatly organized. What was missing were the stories. Why they were laughing. What happened right before. What that day actually felt like. He had saved the files, but the part that made them memorable was already fading.

The second moment came later, on a visit to his parents. They were sitting together, flipping through an old physical album. What made it special was the stories his parents told along the way. Some were from his own childhood, things he has no memory of, described so vividly he could almost see them. Others were from their early days, long before he was around.

That’s when it hit him. So many of these stories live only in his parents’ heads. They come out when an old photo happens to bring them up.

Why this matters

When a moment is fresh, you can recall almost all of it. The conversation, the joke, how you felt. A few years later, most of that is a blur. The photo keeps what the moment looked like. Everything else depends on someone remembering, and on that someone still being around to tell it.

A child won’t remember being two. The only version of those years they will ever have is the one their family saves for them. And the stories our parents and grandparents carry, the ones that explain where a family comes from, will be lost if nobody captures them. We think these stories are one of the most valuable things a family owns, and most of us are losing them quietly, a little every year.

Where our moments live today

Most of our photos and videos end up in one of two places.

The first is a photo library like Google Photos or iCloud. These are great at what they do. They keep everything safe, backed up, and easy to find. But they are built to store files. They can show you a photo from five years ago. They can’t tell you why everyone in it was laughing.

The second is social media. What we post there is shaped by who is watching. We pick the best photo, polish the caption, and leave out anything too personal. Look back at your own posts and they may not feel much like your life. They feel like a highlight reel made for other people.

We’re not trying to compete with either one. Keep your photo library. It does its job well. We want to build something more meaningful than an archive: the place you go when you truly want to take a trip down memory lane. A place where you can go beyond revisiting old photos and videos, and experience what made those moments memorable in the first place. And a place where you can be yourself, because that’s the only way a memory stays true.

What we believe

Privacy comes first. You can only be honest where you feel safe. Your memories belong to you and your family, and nobody else.

No ads, no endless scrolling. Ads run on your data and your attention. We only want your time if it adds something to your life.

Every memory has more than one side. Everyone who was there remembers it a little differently. All of those versions belong.

We’re a small team, building this for our own families first. We’ll share more about the product in a later post. For now, we just wanted you to know why it exists.
